SSE introduces Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Development from AY 2017

Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Development

Around 54 percent of the world’s population has been residing in urban areas by 2014 globally, and the proportion is expected to only grow in years to come. The process of urbanization is being discussed among the researchers’ community. The process of urbanization historically has been associated with other important economic and social transformations, which have brought greater geographic mobility, lower fertility, longer life expectancy and population ageing (United Nation (UN)’s report on World Urbanization Prospects in 2014). Nonetheless rapid and unplanned urban growth threatens sustainable development. ‘Getting cities right’ is the key challenge as poorly organised cities fail to reap their economic potential and challenge societal peace. This is more important as UN has predicted that almost 60 per cent of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2030 and around 95 per cent of urban expansion in the next decades will take place in developing world. UN’s 11th Sustainable Development Goal of ‘Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’ therefore is most apt. Given this, it’s mandatory to build capacity of future urban practitioners and researchers in this area.

Symbiosis School of Economics (SSE) is actively engaged in various research activities to identify the myriad urban challenges and its implications on economic and human development along with teaching a 60-hours post-graduate course on Urban Economics Development.

With the recognition that many practitioners and aspiring researchers would be benefitted by an inter-disciplinary well-structured programme, SSE introduces one-year Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Urban Development from 2017-18. The course will cover more than 10 subjects related to urban development including Urban Governance, Urban Planning and Development, Urban Finance and Urban Development Experiences relevant for India.

Aims and objectives of the Diploma course are:

  • To provide a deeper insight into the subject matter
  • To help students become more employable – with respect to research, academia, consultancy, think-tanks and policy making.
  • To create a class of urban practitioners in India – a much required human resource for the urbanizing India
