"The Indian Drama: Thirty Years of Economic Reform and What Lies Ahead"

The Prof. Suresh Tendulkar Memorial Lecture (STML) is hosted by the Symbiosis School of Economics (SSE), Pune, since 2014 This year Prof Kaushik Basu, presently the C. Marks Professor of International Studies and Professor of Economics at Cornell University, was invited to deliver the memorial lecture, the seventh in the series. Prof Basu spoke about the "The Indian Drama: Thirty Years of Economic Reform and What Lies Ahead"


Prof Kaushik Basu is also the President of the International Economics Association, has served as the senior vice-president and chief economist at the World Bank (2012-2016). In May 2008, he was awarded with the highest civilian award of Padma Bhushan by the President of the country and has worked as Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India (2009 -2012).

Prof. Basu reminisced about how India has been a pioneer in the field of developing the methodology on measuring poverty and highlighted the significant contributions of Prof. Tendulkar is in the field of poverty. He further, went on to discuss the magnitude of changes that came in after the introduction of the reforms of 1991
